The main armament of the BMD-2 is the 30mm 2A42 autocannon.
A 7.62mm PKT machine gun is mounted as coaxial machine gun in the turret.
The 9P135M pedestal mounted anti-tank guided missile launcher is able to fire the long range 9M113 Konkurs (NATO: AT-5 Spandrel) and shorter range 9M111 Fagot (NATO: AT-4 Spigot) anti-tank missiles.
The BMD-2 uses a similar hull to the BMD-1, but uses a new and different turret. Whereas the BMD-1 reused the turret of the BMP-1, the turret of the BMD-2 is a custom design.
The BMD-3 was developed as a larger and more capable vehicle than the earlier BMD-1 and BMD-2. The more spacious design came at the cost of a higher weight and larger dimensions.
