The RGO-78 is a defensive hand grenade of Soviet origin. It was developed in the 1970's. Externally it looks very similar to the RGD-5, on which the design was based.
The RGO-78 is a dedicated defensive version of the RGD-5. It contains less explosive and has a much thicker pre-fragmented steel body. The steel body contains about 850 steel balls.
The RGO-78 has a casualty radius of about 20 meters. Although it can be thrown further than the casualty radius, the operator must seek cover. Otherwise, some fragments may reach the operator.
The RGO-78 was adopted by Soviet forces. It is also exported to other nations, mostly in the Warsaw Pact and other nations with ties with USSR. Although common, the RGO-78 is not nearly as prolific as the earlier RGD-5.
RGO-78 is based on the RGD-5. It is a dedicated defensive version with larger casualty radius.
