Description

Introduction

The SET-65 is a heavyweight torpedo of Soviet origin. It is an acoustic homing torpedo introduced in 1965 for use against submarines, including deep diving nuclear submarines. SET-65 is launched from both surface ships and submarines. It is fitted with an electric motor and over time various homing systems were developed. The SET-65 is a free running torpedo and serves as the basis for the TEST-71 series of wire guided torpedoes. SET-65 is one of the most widely used Soviet Cold War era torpedoes and remains in use today.

Variants of the SET-65

SET-65
Original production model, introduced in 1965.
SET-65M
The SET-65M uses the Sapfir guidance system. Previously named SET-65Sh and sometime referred to as SET-65III. Introduced in 1972.
SET-65A
SET-65 with digital input of firing parameters. Introduced in 1972 for the highly automated Project 705 Lira (NATO: Alfa) class submarines.
SET-65K
SET-65 with improved Keramika active homing system, which is also used on TEST-71MK. Introduced in 1986.
SET-65E
Export model of the SET-65 torpedo.
SET-65KE
Export model of the SET-65K torpedo.
