Description

Introduction

The K7 is a modern sub machine gun of South Korean origin. It was developed by Daewoo in the early 2000's as a less expensive alternative to the proven and widely used Heckler & Koch MP5SD. The K-7 is a very simple weapon and some parts are shared with the older South Korean K1A assault rifle.

Design

The K7 is based on the receiver of the K1A assault rifle. The K7 is a simple blowback operated weapon with short vented barrel and large integrated silencer. The magazine well is originally designed for the 5.56mm round and is fitted with an insert for the smaller straight magazines for the 9mm round. A wire frame retractable stock is fitted and remarkably accessory rails are missing.

Firepower

The K7 fires the 9x19mm round from 30 round straight box magazines. The cyclic rate of fire is very high at 1.150 rpm, but the 3 round burst option aids in controllability. The supersonic 9x19mm rounds are reduced to subsonic speeds and the noise level is about 120 dB. Due to the reduced velocity the maximum effective range is 135 m.

Users

The K7 is used by various South Korean military and law enforcement units. It has also been exported to various nations, most of them situated in Asia.

Variants of the K7

The K7 is produced in only one variant. A version without the integrated silencer is not available. The K7 is easily distinct from the MP5SD by its K1A receiver with large rear sight hub, oversize magazine well and straight magazines. It is possible to mount a sling and laser illuminator.
