Description

Introduction

The FHJ84 is a late Cold War era reusable rocket launcher of Chinese origin. The FHJ84 is type classified as a chemical rocket launcher. It is intended to be used against infantry positions and for laying smoke screens. In its role it is similar to the Russian RPO-series and American M202 Flash.

Design

The FHJ84 is a twin barrel rocket launcher. The launcher is reusable and the 62mm diameter rockets are loaded from the rear. The rockets are blunt nosed and feature wrap around fins at rear. An optical sight and carry handle are fixed to the upper launch tube. A bipod and trigger unit with pistol grip are fitted to the lower launch tube. The FHJ84 is operated by a single soldier, although others are needed to carry additional ammunition.

Firepower

The FHJ84 was originally developed with two types of ammunition. An incendiary round with slow burning compound is to be used against fortified infantry posisitions. A white phosphourous smoke round is used for laying smoke screens, but can also be used against infantry positions. In the late 1980's and airburst rocket was developed for use against infantry in the open. There are contradicting reports that the same diameter rocket of the Type 70-I rocket launcher can be used in the FHJ84. If that is the case it would add the ability to engage light armored vehicles, since that rocket penetrates 300mm RHA.

Users

The FHJ84 is used by the Chinese military. It appears to be a standard piece of equipment, but seems not as widely distributed as other types of rocket launchers.

Overview of FHJ84 ammunition types

The following types of ammunition are available:
- Incendiary
- White phosphourous smoke
- Airburst fragmentation

M202 Flash

The American M202 Flash is a four tube rocket launcher with incendiary rockets. This was perhaps the inspiration for replacing flamethrowers in Chinese service with a multi-tube rocket launcher.
