Description

Introduction

The UR-416 is a late Cold War era armored personnel carrier of German origin. It was developed as a private venture for law enforcement and para military use. The UR-416 is based on the widely used Unimog 416 light truck, making it rather cheap to acquire and maintain. It is replaced in production by the better quality TM-170 and Condor.

Design

The UR-416 is based on the Unimog 416 4x4 light truck chassis. The standard cab and load area are replaced by a steel plate monocoque hull. Most UR-416 are fitted with a door on each side, a large rear door and multiple roof hatches. A one man turret or pintle mounted weapons are installed on many versions. Those used for internal security use are often fitted with a dozer blade

Firepower

The UR-416 is usually armed with one or more pintle mounted machine guns. Heavier weapons such as the 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun can be fitted as well. Even a one man turret with 20mm autocannon was developed and produced for export. Those use for law enforcement in Europe are mostly unarmed.

Protection

The steel monocoque hull provides protection against small arms fire and shell splinters. Heavy machine gun rounds and armor piercing rounds will pierce the hull.

Mobility

The Unimog chassis gives the UR-416 good mobility on roads and dirt roads. The maximum speed is about 80 km/h on roads. The UR-416 is not amphibious and lacks in true cross country mobility.

Users

Over 1.000 UR-416 were produced and sold to many police forces, para military forces and armed forces. Many were used by the police in Europe. Large quantities were sold to South America, Africa, the Middle East and some to Asia. Many UR-416 have now been replaced by newer models, but it soldiers on in many nations as a law enforcement vehicle.

Variants of the UR-416

The UR-416 is an armored personnel carrier based on the Unimog 416 light utility truck. The distinctive shape of the monocoque steel hull makes it easy to recognize. The baseline vehicle could be adapted for various uses, including: armored personnel carrier, internal security vehicle, reconnaissance, command vehicle and ambulance role.

The majority of the produced vehicles are of the UR-416 M type. This model features a slightly longer hull, seats 2 additional passengers and has an uprated engine.
